About Us
The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Virginia is to make an impact on the lives of children and youth and to assist them in becoming confident, competent and caring individuals by providing them with caring and responsible adult mentors.
Matching dedicated volunteers with deserving children is what we do best. In 2009, we provided mentors to approximately 500 children throughout the Central Virginia area. By matching a volunteer with a child in need, we not only give that child hope for his or her future, but we create a culture of giving back to the community. Through the efforts of our volunteers, we change lives…for the better!
In fact, over FY2009:
- - 95.5% of our Littles have shown improvement in their self-confidence
- - 74% have improved their academic performance
- - 88% have improved their ability to express their feelings
- - 65.5% have improved their relationships with peers
- - 74% have improved their attitude toward school
Improvement in these areas undoubtedly positively impacts our Littles’ decision-making and overall development into young adulthood. Beyond this, there is the residual effect that a Little’s improvement has on their siblings, other family members, classmates and friends. Not only are volunteers serving as positive role models, but their Littles also serve as role models to their peers when making the right decisions and improving their lives.
